What happens at an orthodontic examination?
Dr. Vasseman: what should my child and I expect during the initial exam?Evaluating your child's mouth prior to orthodontic work is much like a regular dental exam, except that models are made from impressions of your child's teeth. I will use that model in your plan of treatment, which is as individualized as you are. I also will utilize your child's head and teeth x-rays, medical and dental health histories, as well as photos of your child's teeth, face and smile to round out the preliminary work before I insert spacers. What exactly are spacers, Dr. Vasseman?Spacers come in two types, small springs or plastic modules, and take just a few days to create the space needed for me to attach the bands for your braces. Normally your teeth fit tightly against one another. The spacers gently allow slight gaps to be created between the desired teeth so that I will be able to insert the bands. Any discomfort or soreness usually goes away in a few days. Rinsing your mouth with warm salt water relieves any irritation, as does your normal chewing. What if one of the spacers comes out?If a spacer comes out for any reason, please call me at (888) 581-3927 immediately for a replacement. The spacer may be very small, but plays an important role in the comfortable fit for your braces.
